Photograph of a man identified as Edward Shoemate. He is photographed wearing a star badge and holding a rifle in his right hand. The description on the back of the photograph indicates he was photographed by Brown Brothers of New York. He is described as the constable of Monterey, Virginia who led a posse that "killed two Ryder brothers, and the killing of whome is expected will result in a mountain feud."
