Excerpts of letters written by James Franklin Haynes to his daughter Mary Haynes Dalton detailing his memories of Appalachian State Normal School in 1912, 1923, and 1926. Mary Haynes Dalton compiled the excerpts into this document, copyrighted 1992.

Biographical Note

James Franklin Hayes began his teaching career after attending a six week summer course at Appalachian Training School in 1912. He spent fourteen years as a teacher at schools in Wilkes, Yadkin, and Forsyth Counties. Hayes returned in 1923 for a twelve week course and again (Appalachian State Normal School) in 1926 for a full year of study.
