Athletics Council records
Scope and Contents
These records contain a variety of papers, including memorandums, meeting minutes, policies, and budget information of the Athletics Council. Included are records of the sports: baseball, basketball, bowling, fencing, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, track, and wrestling. Athletic conferences and associations included in the records are the Atlantic Coast Conference, Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and the North State Conference. Conference records consist of yearbooks, ranking lists, constitutions, bylaws, and financial statements. The majority of the records date between 1961-1971, with some earlier materials dating from 1948. Box 4, Folder 4 and Box 5, Folder 9 include records dating 1965-1967 of a study conducted by the Council to test the feasibility of intercollegiate athletics for women beginning with basketball, and tennis.

Biographical / Historical
The Athletics Council advises the Chancellor and the Athletics Director regarding policies governing Appalachian's program of intercollegiate athletics. It monitors the academic progress of student athletes, assists in long-range planning, provides advice concerning financial matters, promotes a proper balance between men's and women's sports, and gives advice on other relevant matters. These records were transferred by Alan Houser, a faculty representative Department of Philosophy and Religion. Houser served on the Athletics Council. The collection was accessioned as 2011.06.14.
