Scope and Contents

The Richard Howe Papers contain materials and documents pertaining to Howe’s publications on Faculty Emeriti Leaders of Appalachian Alumni Family, the North Carolina Association of Colleges and Universities (NCACU), and the Warrensburg-Latham High School Class of 1957 30th Reunion. For series one, the faculty emeritus information includes biographical sketches, correspondence, memos, photographs, curriculum vitae, previous editions of Faculty Emeriti books. For series two, the are rough draft papers, book orders, and award receipts for the Leaders of the Appalachian Alumni Family. In series three, the materials make up the commemorative book for North Carolina Association of Colleges and Universities, which include rough drafts of the publications, biographical information, photographs, correspondence and book order lists. Series four includes some of the publication materials for the Warrensburg-Latham High School Class of 1957 30th Reunion. The files for this collection date from 1968 to 2009 with most materials dating from 1985 to 1987.

Biographical Note

Richard Davis Howe was born and raised in Illinois, earned a B.S. and M.A. at Appalachian State and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Howe served in professional academic posts at Brevard College, Warren Wilson College, Occidental College, UCLA and, since 1973, has served at Appalachian. At ASU, he has served as a professor in the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies in the Reich College of Education, and has served as Director of Compliance Programs and Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs. He taught employment law seminars for North Carolina's Office of State Personnel. Dr. Howe has authored or edited over 176 books, published reports and national research studies. He has additionally written over 2,000 articles, book reviews and biographical sketches. These biographical sketches mostly come from the first seven editions of Howe’s publication, “Faculty Emeriti.”

At Appalachian State University, Dr. Richard Howe has served as a professor in the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies in the Reich College of Education, as Director of Compliance Programs, and as Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs. The Richard Howe Papers contain materials and documents pertaining to Howe’s publications on Faculty Emeriti and on the North Carolina Association of Colleges and Universities (NCACU). Included in this is Richard Howe's publication materials on the Leaders of Appalachian Alumni Family and the Warrensburg-Lathan Highschool Class of 1957 30th Renunion.

Arrangement

This collection was arranged by series of Richard Howe's materials for the books and commemorative publishings: Faculty Emeriti, Leaders of Appalachian Alumni Family, North Carolina Association of Colleges and Universities, and the Warrensburg-Latham High School Class of 1957 30th Reunion. Series I and Series III contain subseries of both materials related to the publishing files, which is Subseries A, and biographical sketch profiles, Subseries B. Within each series and subseries, including book profiles by last names, every file is organized alphabetically.
