Scope and Contents
The Centennial Campaign Records contain planning and administrative documents, publications, ephemera, and photo scans concerning the Centennial Campaign and celebration at Appalachian State University in 1999. University Archives conducted a project in conjunction with the campaign and their file in this record group includes planning materials, research materials, correspondence, notes, meeting minutes and are organized by committee. The University Archivist produced the book The First Hundred Years for the campaign. Additionally, this record group contains article, pamphlets, reports and some other ephemeral material published for the campaign. The photo scans are on several different media formats, the originals of which date 1903-1999. The text for the book The First Hundred Years is also in this file, on a floppy disk.

Historical Note
The Centennial Campaign at Appalachian State University was a yearlong event in 1999, to celebrate the hundred year anniversary of the founding of the institution. Programming during this year included special workshops, lectures, exhibits and symposia on student development issues, sustainable development, children’s literature and the women of Appalachian. The celebration also featured arts events, including special concert and performances, visiting scholars, art installations, folk music and story events, and dramatic performances. University administration also used the occasion to launch new initiatives: more off-campus programs, building renovations and enhancing university athletics.
Appalachian State University was founded as Watauga Academy in 1899 by B.B. and brother D.D. Dougherty. In 1929, the school became a four-year, degree-granting institution – Appalachian State Teachers College. In 1968, ASTC reorganized and became Appalachian State University, and was absorbed into the University of North Carolina system four years later.
