Materials in the Appalachian Regional Brochure Collection is primarily arranged alphabetically by state and further subdivided by city or county. Several brochures represent some cities. Specific attractions with multiple brochures have individual folders arranged by location. A limited number of specific types of attractions that span geographical areas are arranged together.

Access Restrictions

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

This is an artificial collection developed by archivists and librarians in the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection.

The Appalachian Regional Brochure Collection is a collection of brochures of attractions located throughout the Appalachian Regional Commission-defined counties and the Appalachian Trail states. The collection covers historical sites and tourist attractions, providing insight into the promotion of tourism in the Appalachian region in addition to describing the sites themselves. Brochures currently cover the following states: Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.


Materials are arranged alphabetically in folders within a file cabinet within the Special Collections workroom. Additional brochures are regularly added.

Acquisitions Information

Various individuals regularly donate brochures for the brochure collection to the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection.

Processed by Kathryn Staley and student employees, continuous; Encoded by Kathryn Staley, March 2005; Rachel Critzer, October 2007; Brandon Milner, October 2008. Reprocessed by Trevor McKenzie, 2013. This collection was reprocessed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.
