J. Walter Jones, M.D. records
Scope and Contents
Each of the four medical ledgers are each approximately 9 in. x 13 in. x 1 in., from Jones' Boone medical practice. The arrangement of information throughout most of the six account books is representative of 19th century double-entry bookkeeping. The index, an alphabetical list of customers' names, is located at the beginning of the ledger and directs users to the pages on which information about individual accounts is recorded.
Entries are organized by name in order of first visitation and contain date of service, charges, payment date and payment method. Entries also list type of service; i.e., visit, office, medicine, gynecological, surgical. Notes beside obstetrical services usually indicate child's sex but not name. The ledgers also show vaccination of local schools, visits to the Appalachian Training School, Watauga County Jail and the Watauga County Home [poor house], and accounts for insurance companies. Some patients indicated as "Colored" although some individuals known to be of African descent were not marked as "Colored."
