Clarice Bolick collection on the American Indian

Scope and Contents

The collection includes publications, photographs, ephemera, and correspondence focused predominantly on Native American history as well as events contemporary to the 1940-60s. There are folders focused on the PHS Indian Hospital in Arizona and Bacone College in Oklahoma. A few documents are related to the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation. Photographs are duplicates of archival photographs produced by the Smithsonian.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Historical note

Clarice Bolick was a resident of Watauga County interested in Native American culture and history. Bolick died in 1993 at the age of 100.

Bacone College is a Baptist college located in Muscogee, Oklahoma. It was originally chartered in 1881 as Indian University to provide a Christian education to members of the Indian Nations.

The Clarice Bolick Indian Collection contains materials regarding American Indians, particularly Plains Indians. Materials include newspaper article clippings, pamphlets, booklets, a few photographs, and one letter to Clarice Bolick.
