Biographical Note

John Ross (1790-1866), also known by his Cherokee name Guwisguwi, was the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1828-1866, during which time the Cherokees were forced to relocate from their ancestral homelands in Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee to Oklahoma.
