Scope and Contents

This collection consists of seventeen blueprints with diagrams of Western Maryland Railway's 1937 expansion project illustrating the Randolph Avenue Overhead off of U.S. Routes 250 and 219 in Elkins, West Virginia. These blueprints provide material specifications and illustrate the railing dimension connections, blast plates, lighting system, and elevations for abutments and piers. They also provide a 3" map of the site in Elkins. The Federal Works Grade Crossing Funds allocated to the state of West Virginia financed this project under the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act of 1935.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Historical Note

Western Maryland Railway was chartered as the Baltimore, Carroll and Frederick Railroad by the state of Maryland in 1852 and renamed Western Maryland Railroad in 1853. By 1870, the Western Maryland Railroad was actively involved in coal. It was acquired by Chesapeake and Ohio in 1968 and consolidated into Chessie Systems in 1973.

Abstract

Western Maryland Railway was chartered as the Baltimore, Carroll and Frederick Railroad by the state of Maryland in 1852 and renamed Western Maryland Railroad in 1853. This collection consists of seventeen 24" x 36" blueprints with diagrams of Western Maryland Railway's 1937 expansion project illustrating the Randolph Avenue Overhead off of U.S. Routes 250 and 219 in Elkins, West Virginia.

The blueprints have been kept in their original order in one oversized folder.

Acquisitions Information

The W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection purchased this collection from Bookworm and Silverfish on 15 November 2005. The accession number is AC.2006.002. The collection was opened to the public in February 2006.
