Historical Note
Chartered in 1827 in Baltimore to compete with the canal freight traffic, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company was one of the longest running of American railroads and one of the first large-scale railroads built. The B&O Railroad inspired practices that subsequent railroads implemented as standard operating procedures. In the early 1830s, the railway experimented with steam/coal power and carriage designs through competitions. By 1853, the railroad had reached the Ohio River. While it was significantly damaged by Civil War battles, the railroad recovered and prospered through World War Industry. In 1964, the B&O Railroad merged into the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway.
