Historical Note

Anthropology has been taught at Appalachian State University since 1970. At first, anthropology was part of a combined Department of Sociology and Anthropology. In 1978, the Department of Anthropology was established. The original program offered B.A. and B.S. degrees in Anthropology and has since grown to include concentrations in Archaeology, Biological Anthropology, General Anthropology, Applied Anthropology, and Sustainable Development. In 1993 a special program, the ASU Laboratories of Archaeological Science, was begun. The Department is now the largest anthropology program in North Carolina offering only undergraduate degrees.
