Scope and Contents

The Department of Chemistry Records contain mostly administrative and correspondence material dating 1961-1995. Much of the material is correspondence and memoranda between faculty, staff, the College of Arts and Sciences, Vice-Chancellor's office, the Dean's office, the Chemistry Department and the Chemistry Department chair. Additionally, this record group contains meeting minutes, information on continuing education, information on the A.R. Smith Scholarship, studies, research projects, student recommendations, operating documents, and other administrative documents.

Historical Note

Chemistry has been taught at Appalachian since at least 1926, and the Department of Chemistry was established around 1934. Currently, the department offers one Bachelor of Arts degree and several Bachelor of Science options, including a secondary education concentration with teaching licensure. Bachelor of Science degrees include the following concentrations: Certified Chemist, Environmental, Forensic Science, Individually Designed, Marketing and Business, Professional and Paramedical.
