Historical Note
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences has a long history at Appalachian. Beginning in 1912, Appalachian Training School had a Domestic Science Space, with some instruction and in 1913, courses in Home Economics were offered. With the establishment of Appalachian State Teachers College came the establishment of the Department of Home Economics, which held this name until 1996. Between 1968 and 1996, the Department of Home Economics was in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. In 1997, the department was renamed as the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences and remained in the College of Fine and Applied Arts until 2010, when ASU established the College of Health Sciences. Some of the elements of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences were moved to that college under the name of Nutrition and Health Care Management, and the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences itself was relocated to the Reich College of Education. Currently, the department offers undergraduate and graduate coursework, with programs in Apparel and Textiles, Child Development, and Family and Consumer Sciences Secondary Education, leading to Bachelors of Science degrees and Master of Arts degrees.
