Historical Note
Health and Physical Education courses have been taught at Appalachian since at least 1921, at Appalachian Training School, and eventually a Department of Health and Physical Education was established, which lasted until 1972. Between 1973 and 1984, the department operated as the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and between 1985 and 1991 as the Department of Health Education, Physical Education and Leisure Studies. In 1991, the department was renamed The Department of Health, Leisure and Exercise Science (HLES) and was then operating in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Currently, HLES operates in the College of Health Sciences (established in 2010) and offers undergraduate coursework and degrees five major disciplines: Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Health Promotion, Physical Education and Recreation Management. In addition, the HLES PE Basic Instruction Program provides students throughout the university a wide variety of physical activity courses.
