Scope and Contents

The Department of Mathematical Sciences records include correspondence pertaining to the faculty of the Math Department, particularly Willam Paul, department chair during a large portion of the 1980s. Topics discussed include conferences, changes in policies, travel, requests for information, and scheduling. Additional correspondence relates submissions to CENTROID, the official publication of the North Coarolina Council for Teachers in Mathematics which is edited by Appalachian State University faculty.

This collection also contains information related to departmental faculty meetings. These meetings cover issues such as the needs of the department, committee assignments, proposed changes in the Master of Arts Applied Math program, personnel evaluations and reccomendations (restricted), Graduate Review Committee reports, SACS self-study,the department mission statement, course schedules, the computer science program, and syllabus information.

Historical Note

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is a part of the College of Arts and Sciences at Appalachian State University. The departments was established in 1973, but had previously been known as the Department of Mathematics. It helps students excel in quantitive skills, applicable to a diverse range of fields such as business, industry, government, and teaching at the elementary, secondary, and college levels.

Degrees offered include a Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Sciences; a Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics; a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics (with six concentration options); a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, Secondary Education; and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics. Master's degrees are offered in Mathematics and Mathematics Education. The department's offices and classrooms are in Walker Hall.

Arrangement

Files are arranged in two series, faculty correspondance and department meetings. Within each series files are arranged chronologically with portions of the William Paul correspondance maintained in seperate folders.

Acquisitions Information

These records were transferred to the archives from the Department of Mathematical Sciences in multiple accessions (UA.2005.202, UA.2006.210, and UA.2011.050).
