Historical Note

The Division of University Advancement at Appalachian State University supports and encourages the university’s academic mission by engaging alumni and friends and the local community. University Advancement staff help connect these constituents with the university through one-on-one contact, news and information, and special programming, thereby securing the university loyalty and financial resources necessary to create the best possible learning environment for Appalachian students and to best serve the citizens of North Carolina. The division incorporates the offices of: Alumni Affairs, University Communications and Cultural Affairs, Development, and Appalachian State University Foundation, Inc. These constituent offices and the operations they carry out have been under different names, but the Division of University Advancement was created in 1990, and has had a relatively similar structure since then.
