Scope and Contents
The General College Records contain a variety of files and subjects due to the often-shifting organization of the programs within the General College, but are generally administrative in nature or pertain to specific program information. Material types include correspondence, reports, policies and procedures, program files, meeting minutes and memoranda. Subjects of these files include: Center for Developmental Education, Wilderness Center, proposed Wilderness College, Dean of the General College, University Honors, Special Undergraduate Programs, Interdisciplinary Studies, Earth Studies, Orientation and Academic Affairs. These records date 1963-1990.

Historical Note
The General College of Appalachian State University was established in 1968, with the restructuring of Appalachian State Teacher’s College into multi-disciplinary university. At that time, General College comprised Financial Aid, Medical Services, the Registrar, the student union, security, advising, and other functions, some of which moved to Student Development, Academic Affairs, and Business Affairs in the early 1970s. The General College also contained several academic programs, including International Programs, Interdisciplinary Studies, Freshman Seminar, and the Honors Program. Many of these programs are now under University College.
