Scope and Contents
The Physical Plant Records contain a wealth of material relating to projects undertaken by the Physical Plant as well as files relating to daily operations. Though the files date 1931-2003, many of the files date between 1967 and 1994. Material types include correspondence, budget records, floor plans, project manuals, project planning documents, meeting minutes, contract documents and blueprints. Subjects of these documents include Capital Improvement, Energy Management System, New River Power and Light, roofing, safety, renovations, maintenance, Rivers Street, construction specifications, Duncan Hall, Broome-Kirk Gym, Rankin Science Building, UNC General Assembly, energy conservation, Camp Broadstone, Conrad Stadium, as well as other specific building projects.

Access Restrictions
Blueprints and detailed plans of buildings and infrastructures contained within this record group are restricted. The following accessions are restricted due to the presence of confidential information: UA.2003.164, UA.2005.262, UA.2005.265, UA.2005.267, and UA.2006.174.
Historical Note
The basic purpose of the Physical Plant Department is to create an aesthetically pleasing, environmentally sound, and energy efficient physical environment for the campus community. It operates and maintains the Physical Plant segment of this environment (buildings and grounds), and also provides auxiliary services as needed to facilitate and support the distinctive role of Appalachian State University (ASU) as a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina system. The Physical Plant operates within Business Affairs, and works closely with the Office of Design and Construction. It has been in operation at ASU since at least 1971.
