Scope and Contents

James Arnold provided a number of services for Daniel Boardman, among them searching titles and tax liabilities, submitting bids for purchase, overseeing necessary surveying, paying taxes, supervising legal disputes and court cases in Harrison and Lewis Counties, West Virginia, all discussed at length in this correspondence. In his first letter, Arnold advises on the proper time to see land, and later describes some of the property.

Other documents in this collection include two letters from Boardman concerning financial matters relating to the lands, two documents from Virginia officials in Richmond describing a title search and listing taxes for various parcels of land, a statement on taxes paid for lands in Greenbrier and Monroe Counties, accompanied by an auditor's brief on these lands, and letters from other agents and property owners.

Biographical Note

James Arnold acted on behalf of Daniel Boardman in many instances of real estate deals and interests in West Virginia and Virginia. This correspondence shows examples of his work: deed title searches and tax inquiries on parcels of land, submitting bids and overseeing surveys, and supervising court cases for Daniel Boardman. Boardman likely owned or looked to own real estate in Harrison and Lewis Counties, West Virginia as well as Greenbrier and Monroe Counties, Virginia.

Abstract

This collection is a series of letters from the early nineteenth century from James Arnold to New York merchant Daniel Boardman, regarding his land interests in Clarksburg, West Virginia. It contains documents dating July 1803 to July 1824.

Arrangement

This collection was left in its original order, close to chronological, due to the delicacy of the papers in handling. There are sheets of archival paper separating each leaf.

This collection was purchased from L&T Respress Books in July 2004 and accessioned as AC.2004.020.
