Scope and Contents

The Department of Geography and Planning Records contain publications and weather reports, dating 1928-1971. B.B. Dougherty opened a weather station on campus in 1928, which operated until 1971, during which time Dougherty and other operators collected daily weather reports. The publications in this record group include Planning Base Studies for Elkin, NC, Conference Proceedings, and a lab manual. These records also include a file for a position search.

Historical Note

Geography courses have been offered at Appalachian since at least 1926 and the combined Department of Geography and Geology offered coursework until the Department of Geography was established in 1975. In 1983, the department became the Department of Community Planning and Geography, and finally in 1987, the Department of Geography and Planning. Currently, the department operates in the College of Arts and Sciences, and offers undergraduate coursework and degrees in geography including a B.S. in Geography, a B.A. in General Geography, and a B.S. in Community & Regional Planning.
