Scope and Contents

The John A. Walker College of Business Records contain program files, committee and council files, administrative files, correspondence, and many records from the Dean’s Office. These records date 1961-2005, with bulk dates of 1980-2000. Program files are often both academic and administrative in nature, including reports, proposals, memoranda, and policies and procedures. Also included are the CEO Lecture Series Files, 1988-2005. This accession contains information on the lectures themselves, including video and audio of many of the lectures, as well as administrative files pertaining to the organization of the events. Records from the Dean’s Office include correspondence with other departments, faculty and university staff, as well as information on various committees and councils within the College of Business.

Historical Note

The Walker College of Business was established in 1970, with the formation of other colleges after Appalachian State Teachers College became Appalachian State University, and incorporated the already extant Department of Economics and Department of Business. The college was named for John A. Walker in 1976. Walker was an executive vice president for Lowe’s Companies, Inc. and a major donor to ASU’s College of Business. As of 2011, the College of Business offers undergraduate and graduate coursework in a variety of areas including: Accounting, Computer Information Systems, Economics, Finance & Banking, Hospitality & Tourism Management, International Business, Management, Marketing, and Risk Management & Insurance. The college also offers a Masters of Business Administration and a Master of Science in Accounting.
