Scope and Contents
The collection consists of a double-sided newspaper page from the November 24, 1892 Christian Advocate. In this article is the sermon given by Rev. E.E. Wiley before the Holston Conference of the M.E. Church, South in Wytheville, Virginia in October 1892. Its theme as stated by Rev. Wiley is "the gospel according to Southern Methodism." Within it, Rev. Wiley discusses slavery, race relations, and women's roles within the church.

Educated at Wesleyan Univeristy, Rev. E.E. (Ephraim Emerson) Wiley (1814-1893) became Professor of Ancient Languages and later President of Emory and Henry College, where he served for forty years. He was later President of Martha Washington College in Abingdon, Virginia for five years. It is stated that he was the most eminent man in Holston Methodist Conference for fifty years and one of the great preachers of the South.
