Historical Note
Freshman Seminar (now called First Year Seminar) was established at ASU in 1987 by James Smith and Randy Swing as a course to help students transition to college. The program operates within the University College, and all Appalachian students are required to take it. First Year Seminar introduces first year Appalachian students to rigorous academic study at the University level through interdisciplinary engagement with a variety of disciplines and perspectives, and to the foundation of the university’s General Education program. Additionally, as evidenced by this record group, some of the curriculum of Freshman Seminar involves the history of ASU and the region. The program was recognized by TIME magazine in 2001, when Appalachian was named a “College of the Year.”
