Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials about and original writings of L. Grady Burgiss. Several examples of his poetry are included, as well as a pamphlet he wrote, thanking the staff of Brenam Senior Village, Triad Senior Village, and Heritage Care of Elkin for their care of Burgiss and his wife Annie in the late 1980s. Several articles about the first Poet Laureate of Yadkin County (Burgiss) and his service to his community have been copied as part of this collection.

An inventory of the books in Burgiss's library as of September 1987 is also part of this collection, most of which now reside in the Yadkin County Museum of Art and History in Yadkinville, North Carolina.

Biographical Note

L. Grady Burgiss (1902-1993) was born in Yadkin County, North Carolina, near Winsor's Cross Roads. His father was Thomas Edward Burgiss, a farmer and school teacher. When Mr. Burgiss was about 12, the family moved to Elkin, about 15 miles from his birthplace. Burgiss helped his family's financial straits by working odd jobs, and at 14 worked a 60 hour week at a furniture factory. In 1925 Burgiss felt the call to the Gospel ministry, made plans to finish his education, and was ordained in the Elkin First Baptist Church. He is attributed with starting 43 churches and missions during 50 years as a minister. In 1973, he was appointed for life as the Poet Laureate of Yadkin County, North Carolina by the County Board of Commissioners. He was an author of at least seven volumes of poetry and an autobiography "A Planter of Churches."

Acquisitions Information

From the last item in the folder, it appears this collection was donated by Rev. L. Grady Burgiss in honor of his wife Annie Cooper Burgiss who graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1928. The collection was donated on July 2, 1990. It was later accessioned as AC.2011.074.
