Biographical/Historical Note

In the 1903 North Carolina Year Book and Business Directory for Jefferson, North Carolina, Todd and Pell is listed as a law firm.

George P. Pell wrote several monographs on the law of North Carolina during the late 1800s/early 1900s.

J.W. Todd served as First Sargeant of the First North Carolina Calavry during the Civil War. Upon retirement as a superior court judge, Pell taught law in a night school in Rocky Mount, North Carolina in the 1920s.

When the railroad came to Elk Cross Roads, North Carolina, in 1914, the community name was changed to Todd, after Captain J.W. Todd, eminent lawyer and a leading citizen of Ashe County during the 1860s. The railroad caused sawmills to practically denude the Todd area of marketable lumber and the railroad left in 1918.
