Historical Note
The Student Financial Aid Office, within the Division of Student Development, seeks to remove financial barriers to higher education for those who are unable to meet college costs and to assist students and families in securing the financial resources necessary to attend college. The office aids students in applying for, securing, and administering various financial aid at Appalachian State University including grants, loans, employment, scholarships, and federal aid.
Financial aid can be defined as any grant or scholarship, loan, or paid employment offered to help a student meet his or her college expenses. Such aid is usually provided by various sources such as federal and state agencies, colleges, high schools, foundations, and corporations. The amount of financial aid that a student receives is determined through federal, state and institutional guidelines. Grants include aid the student receives that need not be repaid. Loans are to be repaid, with interest rates and repayment terms vary by program.

Abstract
The records of the Student Financial Aid Office is used to secure and provide financial assistance to students seeking higher education at Appalachian State University. The Student Financial Aid offices contains primarily administrative files, reports, and program information dating 1959-1988. This collection includes department interactions and uses by annual reports and loan information for the chancellor office, faculty and committee meetings, fiscal operations, and memos on behalf of Student Development.
Arrangement
This collection has been arranged into four different series. The first series is an grouping of various reports, from fiscal operation reports reflective of Student Development and annual reports to the chancellor's office. Expenditures and budget information is accounted for in the reports. The second series contains all information on the various federal aid programs and requests for federal funds. Included in this series are awards, procedures, and applications to participate in student federal aid programs. The third series contains all academic scholarships, scholarship funds, allocation letters, loan documents, federal allotments, grant information, and private foundation awards. The fourth series contains computer center information related to the computer programs and work-study programs. Within each series files are organized primarily by alphabetical titles, then chronologically by the year of its content.
