Scope and Contents
This collection contains materials related to D. D. Dougherty and his family, which include two small books of poetry inscribed "DDD 1923," an autograph book belonging to Lillie Shull Dougherty and a black and white photograph of D. D. Dougherty's parents, Daniel Baker and Ellen Caroline Dougherty.

Dauphin Disco Dougherty was born on March 11, 1869 to Daniel Baker Dougherty and Ellen Caroline Bartlett Dougherty. He founded Watauga Academy (1899-1903) with his brother, Blanford Barnard Dougherty. He served as business manager and treasurer of the Appalachian Training School (1903-1925) and Appalachian State Normal School (1925-1929), as well as serving on the Watauga County School Board of Education from 1925-1929. He obtained an A.B. from Wake Forest and also taught science at Appalachian Training School, including physiology, physics, zoology, astronomy, and algebra. He married Ida Lillie Bell Shull (1874-1945) in 1896 and was father to Clara Bartlett (1898-1971), Annie Lewis (1903-2001), Daniel Disco (1906-1908), David Barnard (1909-1965), and Edwin Shull (1913-1973). He died on June 10, 1929.

The Dauphin Disco Dougherty Papers is a small collection of personal items belonging to D.D. and his family, including two poetry books from 1923, his wife Lillie's autograph book from 1889-1897, and a black and white photo of his parents, Daniel Baker Dougherty and Elen Caroline Bartlett Dougherty.
These items occupy one small flat box with the individual items in archival envelopes.
These items were separated from the Tui St. George Tucker Collection about 2010 and accessioned as AC.2010.082.
