Historical Note

Published in Abingdon Virginia, The Plow was an independent newspaper designed to address the issues facing Appalachia. The articles and opinions it printed were often controversal.

The geographic focus of the paper was on the mountain regions of southwest Virginia, east Tennessee, and western North Carolina. It was published monthly from October 1975 until June 1978 and then bimonthly from June 1978 until August 1979 when it suspended publication, never to resume.

The Plow's more notable regular columns included "The Furrowed Brow" on political issues, "Shellrock Farm" which provided recollections of subsistence farming, reader's comment section, and an "Old-Tool Quiz."
