Historical Note

Railroads have strong ties to maps and blueprints. As major landowners they require accurate maps of their trackage, and interactions with industrial, mining, and commercial sites they service. Detailed drawings consists of cars, improvement projects, and other items, which are essential for supporting operations.

The railways that produced, and were associated with, the objects in this collection, provided service to large portions of the Mid-Atlantic and Southern regions of the United States. Today most of their operations have been absorbed into the Norfolk Southern Railway.
