Content Description This collection consists of copies an autograph book, certificates, and photographs belonging to Lou Belle West Godwin, who was a student at Appalachian Training School in the summer of 1924 for a teaching certificate. It also includes a biography of Godwin, written by her daughter, Linda Murphy. The photographs are of Godwin, other students, and locations in and around Boone.

Scope and Contents This collection contains two items. The first is an original certificate issued by the Appalachian Training School to Martha Blanche Horton on May 2, 1923 for satisfactorily completing studies "not marked." There is a list of courses along both the left and right margins. Those crossed out were not completed by Horton. These others were. The second item is an original diploma issued to Horton by the Appalachian State Normal School, dated August 22, 1925

Abstract B.B. Dougherty was a founder of the Appalachian Training School in 1903. His papers primarily include materials relating to Dr. Dougherty's role as an administrator of Appalachian State Teachers College and predecessor institutions (1903-1955), and his many positions on state boards and committees concerned with the education in North Carolina (1911-1957).

Abstract Appalachian State University received its current name on July 1, 1967, transforming over the years from a small teachers’ college to a multi-disciplinary university. The University Deeds collection contains the original deeds to properties belonging to the university as well as supporting documentation, copies and abstracts of the deeds, notes and correspondence, title analysis, maps and drawings of property, certifications, and contracts.
