Abstract The Appalachian photographs collection contain print photographs and negatives of the Appalachian region, mostly Northwestern North Carolina, but also some parts of Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. It contains photographs, slides, and negatives. Images include Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, and Watauga Counties, Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone, and unidentified images of towns, people, and museum exhibits.

Scope and Contents The Appalachian Training School Collection contains land deeds, student class constitution and minutes, library borrowing records, promotional brochure, and manuscript for a student magazine. The deeds are for land in and around Boone and Watauga County, NC, owned by Watauga Academy, Appalachian Training School, and members of the school's Board of Trustees. Abstract Geography courses have been offered at Appalachian since at least 1926 and the Department of Geography was established in 1975 as its own academic unit. The Department of Geography and Planning Records contain publications and weather reports, dating 1928-1971.

Abstract The Elizabeth Brown Scoggins collection contains papers, photographs, documents, and artifacts spanning the history of Appalachian State and Watauga County from the 19th Century to the early 21st. Much of the collection is devoted to the Dougherty, Brown, and Bartlett families with an emphasis on concerning B.B. and D.D. Dougherty, founders of what would become Appalachian State University.

Abstract Ella W. Thompson and her husband Dr. Lloyd LeRoy Hobbs were students at Appalachian State Teacher's College from 1933 to 1937. This collection of scrapbooks, memorabilia, and publications documents their experiences at ASTC including correspondence with family and friends.
Abstract Freshman Seminar (now called First Year Seminar) was established at ASU in 1987 as a course to help students transition to college. The program operates within the University College, and all Appalachian students are required to take it. These records contain several VHS tapes pertaining to the history of Appalachian, as well as student papers, historical files, curriculum files and a file from the Educational Goals Task Force.

Abstract B.B. Dougherty was a founder of the Appalachian Training School in 1903. His papers primarily include materials relating to Dr. Dougherty's role as an administrator of Appalachian State Teachers College and predecessor institutions (1903-1955), and his many positions on state boards and committees concerned with the education in North Carolina (1911-1957).
Abstract "The Mistake of Young Men" is an an 1896 article from Carson-Newman College's The Carson-Newman Magazine. Its author, Appalachian State University founder Blanford Barnard Dougherty, wrote about the mistake of not continuing post-graduation learning. This article illustrates both Dougherty's writing style and beliefs on alcohol, war, books, religion, and higher education.
