Abstract
The Elizabeth Brown Scoggins collection contains papers, photographs, documents, and artifacts spanning the history of Appalachian State and Watauga County from the 19th Century to the early 21st. Much of the collection is devoted to the Dougherty, Brown, and Bartlett families with an emphasis on concerning B.B. and D.D. Dougherty, founders of what would become Appalachian State University.

Freshman Seminar (now called First Year Seminar) was established at ASU in 1987 as a course to help students transition to college. The program operates within the University College, and all Appalachian students are required to take it. These records contain several VHS tapes pertaining to the history of Appalachian, as well as student papers, historical files, curriculum files and a file from the Educational Goals Task Force.

This collection, the William Stewart Scott Papers, includes the photographs and memoirs of Stewart Scott (January 22, 1915-February 29, 2004) a West Jefferson, North Carolina resident. Mr. Scott was born near Mill Creek in Ashe County, NC, and spent much of his life in education in Ashe County. He began taking photographs when he returned from World War II, and continued for over 40 years until his death in 2004.
