Bessie and Cora Shoun Papers

This collection consists of two ballad books created by the sisters, Bessie and Cora Shoun, circa 1910 to 1916. The books are constructed like scrapbooks with clippings and handwritten pages pasted onto old magazine or catalog pages.

Edward Hearne Mexican Expedition scrapbook

Scope and Contents This scrapbook was created by Edward W. Hearne, a member of the North Carolina National Guard, in 1916, while he was deployed to Camp Stewart in Texas during the United States' Mexican Expedition against the paramilitary forces of Mexican revolutionary Francisco "Pancho" Villa. Hearne gave the scrapbook a handwritten title, "A Kodak Review of the Terrors of Texas, and the Horror of War." J. Paul Winkler scrapbooks

Abstract

J. Paul Winkler was a graduate of Appalachian State Teacher's College. He was instrumental in organizing the Burke County chapter of alumni. The J. Paul Winkler Scrapbooks, created by Winkler himself, are predominately related to the Appalachian State Teachers College football team, but also includes information realted other ASTC athletic teams and to the college.

Abstract

Louise Parks, from Huntersville, NC, was a student at Appalachian State Teachers College from 1929-1934. This scrapbook dates from 1928-1931, in which she documents the activities she was involved with. The collection contains various candy wrappers, letters, cards, programs, postcards, and poems that Miss Parks glued to the scrapbook pages.

Abstract

Francis T. Borkowski served as Appalachian State University's fifth chancellor from 1993 until 2003. The records reflect the academic and administrative operations within the university, interactions with higher education organizations in North Carolina and the South, athletic programs, cultural outreach efforts, student life, relations with Boone, N.C. and other communities in western North Carolina, alumni relations, and fundraising for the university.

Scope and Contents This handmade scrapbook contains black and white photographs, original poems, and typed narratives of a trip to the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and Gatlinburg in June 1923. The scrapbook was compiled by Orpheus M. Schantz with one poem reading "This is the tale of the jolly four / who spent the night on a balsam floor / on top of Leconte in Tennessee / above the clouds 'neath a balsam tree."
